An analogue to New York’s Stage Door Canteen, the Hollywood Canteen was a night club in Los Angeles where servicemen could meet, dance and drink with Hollywood stars before departing for the Pacific. Dozens of stars donated their time and talents at the Canteen, but none was more devoted than its co-founder, Bette Davis, who was at the peak of her film career. Of course, Hollywood was proud enough of their achievement with the Canteen that they made a movie about it — starring Bette Davis as herself.
